Nic Salt vs Freebase E-Liquid: What's the Difference?

Every nicotine e-liquid uses one of two forms of nicotine: freebase or nicotine salt. They feel different and suit different devices.
Freebase nicotine
Freebase is the original form used in e-liquids. At higher strengths it gives a stronger, harsher throat hit, so it's usually used at lower strengths in higher-power devices that produce more vapour.
Nicotine salt
Nic salts add an acid that makes the nicotine smoother. That lets you use a higher strength – such as 20 mg/mL – comfortably in a low-power pod kit. Nicotine salt is what's inside most disposables sold in Canada.

In Canada, nicotine concentration is capped at 20 mg/mL for all vaping products (Health Canada).
Which should you choose?
- Using a pod kit like the Uwell Caliburn or Vaporesso XROS? Choose nic salt.
- Using a sub-ohm tank or box mod? Choose freebase at a lower strength.
Don't use high-strength nic salt in a high-power sub-ohm setup – the amount of nicotine per puff is much higher.
