MTL vs DTL Vaping Explained
Share
There are two main ways to vape: mouth-to-lung (MTL) and direct-to-lung (DTL). Picking the right style makes choosing a device and e-liquid much easier.
Mouth-to-lung (MTL)
You draw vapour into your mouth first, then inhale into your lungs – like a cigarette. MTL devices have tighter airflow, lower power and higher-resistance coils, and pair with higher-strength nicotine salts.
Good for: people switching from smoking, discreet vaping, longer battery life.
Examples: Uwell Caliburn G3 and G4, Vaporesso XROS, OXVA Xlim, most disposables.
Direct-to-lung (DTL)
You inhale straight into your lungs in one breath, like breathing through a straw. DTL uses looser airflow, higher power and low-resistance (sub-ohm) coils, with lower-strength freebase e-liquid.
Good for: bigger clouds and stronger flavour.
Examples: SMOK Nord 6, Geekvape Aegis kits with a sub-ohm tank like the SMOK TFV18 or Freemax Fireluke 3.
Quick comparison
| MTL | DTL | |
|---|---|---|
| Airflow | Tight | Loose |
| Power | Low | High |
| Coil | Higher resistance | Sub-ohm |
| E-liquid | Nic salt | Freebase, lower strength |
| Vapour | Small | Large |
Which is right for you?
If you're coming from cigarettes or disposables, start with MTL. Shop pod systems, MTL tanks or sub-ohm tanks.
